How the categories game works online
One person creates the room and picks the categories, the number of rounds and the letters. Everyone else joins with the four-letter code or the invite link. Each round a letter is drawn and everybody fills in matching words. The classic set is Name, Place, Animal, Thing, so the game is also known as Name Place Animal Thing.
Whoever fills every field first calls “Stop”. The others get a few seconds to finish writing. Then you check the answers together and see the scores. If you have played Scattergories at a game night, the idea will feel familiar, only without the dice, the timer and the paper.
Scoring and voting on answers
An answer nobody else has scores 10 points. If several players gave the same answer, each gets 5. If you are the only one with a valid answer, you get 20. Empty fields and words with the wrong first letter score nothing.
While reviewing, anyone can challenge another player's answer. An answer is struck only when more than half of the other players challenge it, so the group decides, not one person.
Categories that suit your group
The classic is Name, Place, Animal and Thing. For kids try color, fruit and toys, for fans football club or movie title. At parties people laugh at categories like “Something you forget on vacation”.
With six categories a round usually takes two to three minutes. Eight to ten rounds make a good evening.

FAQ
Do I need an account?
No. You only enter a name. Your seat in the room is remembered in your browser so you can come back after a dropped connection.
How many people can play?
Up to 12 per room. You can play alone to practice.
What if my connection drops?
The room stays open. Open the link or enter the code again and you are back in your seat with your answers so far.
Can I choose my own categories?
Yes. Up to 12 of your own, plus suggestions you can tap.
Who decides whether an answer counts?
The group. During review each player can challenge the others' answers. An answer is struck when more than half of the other players challenge it.
How long does a room stay open?
As long as you play. A room with no activity is deleted after 12 hours. There is no chat.
Is this the same as Scattergories?
It is the same kind of game: a letter, a list of categories, and points for answers nobody else has. Scattergories is a trademark of Hasbro. This website is not affiliated with Hasbro and is a separate, free game.
What is the game called in other countries?
In Germany it is Stadt Land Fluss, in Brazil Adedonha or Stop, in Mexico Basta, in France Petit Bac, in Italy Nomi cose città and in Spain and Argentina Tutti Frutti. The rules are the same.
