HTML code to paste
<iframe src="https://www.playcategories.org/embed/?mode=generator" title="Categories game: random letter and category generator" width="100%" height="480" loading="lazy" style="border:0;max-width:540px"></iframe>
<p><a href="https://www.playcategories.org/">Play the categories game online</a></p>
The snippet contains the iframe and an ordinary link below it. Please keep the link below the frame so visitors see where the tool comes from.
Two modes: generator or round starter
- Letter & category generator (?mode=generator). Visitors draw a random letter with a short animation and roll 5 random categories from the curated language pool right inside the iframe. A button below lets them take those exact 5 categories into an online game room.
- Compact round starter (?mode=starter). Visitors choose between easy letters or the full A–Z alphabet, pick the number of rounds and click “Start game” to open Play Categories in a new tab with those settings ready.
Where the embedded widget fits best
- Game night blogs and party guides. Readers looking for category ideas or a quick letter roller can draw letters and 5 fresh categories without leaving your article.
- Schools and language teachers. On a class page or learning portal, students draw a random letter and five vocabulary prompts for a fast warm-up round.
- Clubs, youth groups and camps. Embed the round starter on your group page so anyone can launch a multiplayer game room in one click.
- Teams and company intranets. Drop the widget onto an internal team page for a five-minute icebreaker before a meeting or Friday social.
Embed in three steps
- Pick your settings. Select the mode (generator or starter), the color scheme, the language and the link text in the configurator above.

- Paste it into your website. Insert the code into a Custom HTML block in WordPress, Google Sites, Wix, Squarespace or any CMS.
Compatible website builders and CMS
- WordPress. Add a “Custom HTML” block in the block editor and paste the snippet. In the classic editor, switch to the “Text” tab.

- Wix, Squarespace and Weebly. Add an “Embed HTML” or “Code” element to your section and paste the code.
- Drupal, Joomla and Typo3. Insert the snippet into an HTML content element. Make sure your editor allows the iframe tag.
- Static sites, Markdown and intranets. Paste the raw HTML directly into your Markdown file or template.
Privacy, dark mode and automatic height
The embedded view at /embed/ is completely self-contained: it sets no cookies, does not touch localStorage, loads no analytics or Matomo script and makes no requests to third parties.
With theme set to automatic, the widget follows the visitor's system preference (prefers-color-scheme). You can also lock it to light or dark via ?theme=light or ?theme=dark.
Whenever its content changes, the widget sends its current height to the parent window via postMessage ({ type: 'pc-resize', height }), while the default height in the snippet already fits every language.
FAQ
Is embedding free?
Yes. Both modes are completely free to embed on personal, educational and commercial websites, with no ads and no sign-up.
Do I have to keep the link below the iframe?
Please do. Search engines and visitors only see the link outside the iframe as a source credit, and keeping that plain link is the only thing we ask in return.
Does the widget set cookies or require a cookie banner?
The widget sets no cookies, uses no local storage and includes no tracking scripts. Because the visitor's browser loads the iframe from our server in Germany, you should mention it as an embedded content source in your privacy policy.
Which mode should I choose?
Choose the generator mode if your visitors play on paper, in class or over video call and want a quick letter and 5 categories right on your page. Choose the starter mode if they want to jump straight into an online multiplayer room.
Does it work on mobile phones?
Yes. The layout adapts smoothly down to narrow 280-pixel screens.
Can I use it in other languages?
Yes. The widget is available in English (/embed/), German (/de/embed/), Portuguese (/pt/embed/) and Spanish (/es/embed/), each with its own curated category pool.
